Something about curls just goes with romance. Perhaps it the curves mimicking the curves of a woman’s body or perhaps its because curls frame your face so much better than straight hair. Whatever it is, curls are an excellent go-to style for your Valentine’s day festivities.
If you are running low on time and you are not sure that a Bantu knot out will dry in time for the big day then a curling wand* is the perfect hair tool to help you get gorgeous bouncy curls pronto.
If you are on a no heat diet then this may not be for you but I may just sway you by saying that this style can be achieved with much less heat to your hair than you think. First off your hair doesn’t necessarily have to be blow dried before you begin curling. Banding slightly damp detangled hair overnight will give you the same effect as a blow out and the resulting curls from the wand will be full, bouncy and will hold beautifully.
You can also get a temperature controlled curling wand and set it to a low to medium setting that will not alter your natural curl pattern. Here are some tricks to getting perfectly defined curls using a curling wand*:
► Use small sections – Smaller sections means that you won’t have to separate your curls afterwards which will keep frizz at bay.
► Curl towards the thin end of the barrel – Smaller curls are tighter and last longer so ensure that the ends of your hair sit towards the tip or thin end of the barrel.
► Compress the curls before releasing them – Nikkimae’s trick to getting the curls to hold their shape is to compress them for a few seconds after you take the curl off the barrel. This allows the curl to cool in it’s new shape so that it won’t fall too quickly.
Now without further ado, let’s get to the tutorials. To start us off here is It’s Sharde showing off her beautiful results on her naturally kinky* 4c hair:
