Reader Question: Advice For Men’s Hair?

Reader Question:

blue_bud_flower

I am a black male and I have a short haircut. The problem with me is that I can’t seem to think of a rountine to benefit my hair. Most of these articles are for women. I would like to know what I can do to my hair in terms of washing, brushing, moisturizing, etc. Please and thank you

Our Answer:

Hi Deonte,

Thanks for contacting us. I’m sorry to sound biased towards women, its just that majority of our readers are women! My husband has benefited from the advise from our website and currently has long hair down past his shoulders but when it was cut short he still used a very similar hair routine.

Now when you say that your hair is cut short I’m not quite sure how short it is but as a general rule with short hair, you can and should get it wet every day while you are having a shower/bath. Black hair is the same whether on a man or woman so shampoos with sulphates are best avoided. Forget the 2 in one shampoo and conditioners because the conditioning step should be separate with a good conditioner.

While your hair is still damp a little natural oil can be used to seal moisture into your hair and give it a little shine, coconut oil is great for this. Alternatively you can use a spray leave in conditioner and move on to styling. Short crops can be brushed with a good boar bristle brush found in most beauty supply stores or some supermarkets. You can achieve waves by brushing your hair in the direction you want the waves then putting on a durag for a little while. Lots of demonstrations on how to do this are on youtube:

If your hair is slightly too long to get good waves then just pick it out with a seamless comb to achieve a good shape to your ‘fro. That’s about it and when you have done this routine a few times it will become like second nature.

Hope that helps and good luck!
