When it comes to maintaining healthy hair, one of the best things you can do on wash day is a pre-poo. If you are a self-titled ‘ultimate kitchenista’ like I am, there is no way you would have tailored your hair care regimen without including pre-poo treatments.
A good pre-poo mixture sets the foundation for wash day by ensuring you get some sort of conditioning in before shampooing so you do not have to worry about dry straw-like hair once you finally rinse out that shampoo.
In case you don’t know what a pre-poo is, it’s simply a “pre-shampoo” treatment that you apply on your hair before you shampoo. The main benefits of pre-pooing are to prevent your hair from drying out too much, to help to add moisture to dry hair and to make detangling a lot easier. This is especially important if you use products with silicones which require you to use sulfate-containing shampoos regularly to rid your hair of buildup.
When it comes to being on a healthy hair journey things can seem a bit mundane since it’s the same old routine, especially if you have been meticulous about consistency. It makes sense to stick to what works but quite frankly, the process may seem a tad bit boring after you have been doing it for some time.
Pre-poos are a great area in your regimen to experiment without the potential for causing much damage if something does not work as intended. It is also a wonderful place to find new ingredients that you would never have thought of but leave your hair feeling like buttah!
Pre-poo recipes vary from the simple to the exotic and even the downright weird! If you are relaxed or natural and already love pre-pooing or you are just getting introduced to the process here are a few fun recipes you ought to give a whirl.
1. Olive Oil, Honey, Conditioner and Eggs Pre-poo
I would not do justice to this post without including this simple, no-nonsense recipe. This one can be considered your go-to recipe if you need a dash of protein with a side of moisture.
In a bowl mix one or two eggs, a tablespoon of honey*, two tablespoons of olive oil*, and enough conditioner to keep the mixture easy to spread. If you have fine hair or hair prone to breakage, a little protein weekly will do nothing but good things for your strands.
The honey*, oil, and conditioner are your moisture agents which balance out the recipe and makes this a very good all-round pre-poo. You don’t have to use a fancy conditioner here. Cheap ones like those found in dollar stores like V05 or Suave are perfect, you just need the conditioner to be moisture-based.
