Trimming
Trimming is pretty debatable because we know women who trim their hair year after year with great success in their hair journey.
However a stylist will tell you that you cannot possibly get a great trim while doing it on yourself. The theories are varied. Many of us who are natural do not need a blunt cut, have been trained in trimming and know how to trim our own hair.
Additionally if we want to cut our hair evenly/blunt we know how to do that as well. Trimming might be easier at the salon but we cannot deny the many times we have gone for a trim and ended up with a chop.
In this case a stylist will stand her ground and say we should go to the salon for a trim but of course many of us will disagree.
Protective styles like box braids
Many of us are heading to the beauty supply store and getting the hair we need, isolating a couple of hours on the weekend and doing our own protective styles.
Some stylists will tell you they wish we would utilize their services more when it comes to protective styles but we know that’s mainly due to them trying to earn your business.
Certainly this could be applied to any salon service but I picked protective styles because there is a bit of noise about women doing these styles at home and having accidents with very hot water being used to seal the hair.
It’s not as though these accidents can’t happen in a salon as well; however, they do have more professional tools that prevent accidents and protect their clients.
The salon game is changing, we are seeing stylists getting very smart using social media to sell their services. They are starting to use their cameras to take pictures of styles that can only be duplicated in a salon.
Additionally salons are allowing women to come in and film routines and put it on YouTube which is amazing advertising.
The point is even though we might not agree on everything, salons and stylists are not going anywhere and while we may sneak a cowash* in here and there at home, we might be inclined to go get a trim or some red every now and again at a salon.

My stylist definitely wishes I would stop putting beeswax in my hair to lay it down during my bad hair days…

Add 5.-Stop watching and imitating YouTube so much and 6. Stop pilling product in your hair. I went to mu beautician this week and these as well as number 1 and 3 were also stressed to me.

Please stop coloring and bleaching your own hair. Coloring is an exact science and everyone’s hair lifts or accepts color differently. I think trims should also be left to the professionals.
