Natural hair expositions and events are all the rave in large cities. Since moving to DC, I’ve noticed that just about every other week to month there is some kind of event going on relating to natural hair. I love it!
Before attending my first event, I have to admit, I was a bit apprehensive. In part, because I was not sure what to expect, so I was sure to read the description carefully to make sure I knew what all would be going on.
When selecting an event to attend I make sure I go for ones that are popular but not too expensive. Also if they have grab bags for all attendees with free goodies that’s always a plus. However, making sure my time is well spent at the event itself is another task in itself.
Here are 4 ways to make sure you get the most out of it:
1. Wear your natural hair
I must stress the importance of wearing your natural hair at the event. I know it’s possible that you might have a protective style in due to timing, but if you can avoid it I would try at all costs.
It’s a beautiful thing to be surround by so many naturals. You will gravitate towards those who have similar textures as yourself and also it can be your chance to show off your favorite style, get compliments, and help ease the tension of being surround by so many strangers.
2. Purchase a new product
Most natural hair events have numerous vendors set up around to sell a product. I always like to walk away with one new product that I cannot find at my local beauty supply store.
Not only are you supporting a small black-owned business, you are also experimenting and possibly finding a new holy grail product that works wonders for your hair.
Just be sure not to go overboard and let that product junkie in you resurface. Set a spending limit and stick to it.
3. Interact
It is very important that you interact at these events you intend. Network with other attendees as well as panelist, ambassadors, and companies. If you are a natural hair blogger or aspiring to be one this is the perfect opportunity to get your name and face out there and make a good impression. If you’re just a lover of all things natural hair, you could meet a new friend and exchange info.
4. Take Notes
Lastly, I think it’s very important to take notes. During a natural hair expo, there’s a lot of things going on and a lot of information constantly being thrown at you. Pick up on any tips and tricks during the hair demonstrations, or small talks and jot them down.
If you spend a great deal of time chatting with a natural hair guru and she has given you some advice, don’t just count on your mind to remember. It’s okay to take notes to reflect on later!
