Melanesia is a subregion of Oceania extending from the western end of the Pacific Ocean to the Arafura Sea, and eastward to Fiji. The region comprises the countries of Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
Melanesians of some islands are one of the few non-European peoples, and the only dark-skinned group of people outside Australia, known to have blond hair

The countries that make up Melanesia are Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.

Jermirah Saleem my mom was born with blonde hair and hazel green eyes.
Jamirah Saleem says
It not too hard to belive that a black child could be born with blond hair, albinos are black with blond hair but for a whole race of people? Like I said I’ll belive it when I see it… With my own two eyes and not on Wikipedia. I don’t belive everything I see on the Internet, and it’s so far fetched to me because I am so educated about who I am and I know More Than Most Of The Time only full fledged white people are the only people born with blonde hair and blue eyes. Sorry. Lol I agree, people need to do their homework!
Barbz N Jay says
Well these people with dark skin and natural blonde hair do exist. I’m Melanesian and there are certain parts where these people have those features. You sound like you need to do your homework. Ignorance at it’s best.
Meaka Jones says
I’m beginning to think you are a troll…please tell me you’re not that dumb…also these children do not have blue eyes as well…the blond gene is natural to these people in the Solomon Islands. They are not mixed with Europeans. Their color has nothing to do with illness or defect. Saying you do not believe it means nothing…it just is.
Eboni Taylor says
I’m in NC and my friend who is black has blonde hair and blue eyes. I have seen it myself so I believe it.
Victoria Anderson says
Did you guys know that the gene that makes the Aboriginals of Australia dark skinned is a completely different gene than the gene that makes African descendants pigmented? They are as genetically unrelated to Africans as Whites, (although we are all African!)
Patrícia Atai says
That is incorrect, dated, racial bias case studies created by Europeans who migrated to Australia and attempted to get rid of the Aboriginals. They used that as justification to groups that held their acts accountable, citing that it wasn’t the same as civil rights because these people were neither Black nor White. Please don’t cite dated information.
Victoria Anderson says
I actually took a class on just this subject recently, I could be wrong, but the most recent information I have seen is that the Aboriginals split from the Northeast African region about 50,000 years ago, while European and Asian ancestors split from the mother land about 30,000 years ago. If you know of some sources I could look at I would be genuinely interested, I find genetics really interesting. Thanks!
Ashley Jones says
TYRP1 is the gene that gives Australian aborigines and Melanesians their the blond hair, but they’re black because of the melanin in their skin and that goes for blacks globally. Melanin gives us our pigmentation. 🙂
Lasilia Imnottheonenottoday Thornton says
finally someone mentioned the genetic evidence.
Nicole Wright-Upperman says
Jermirah Saleem, having blue, hazel or violet eye is actually a genetic defect. And all babies on matter what there race, have blue eyes in utero.
Je'ney Hawthorne says
?? Who cares at the end of the day we die and can’t take looks with you….stupid ugh
Lasilia Imnottheonenottoday Thornton says
the ignorance displayed by a few in this thread is sad to say the least. when people cant believe what they see or never actually go to GOOGLE, BING , or ASK.COM to search for additional info, it makes it plain that laziness and basic comprehension skills are sorely lacking. the lovely babies in this pic are melanesian. they are not african, they reside in the solomon islands. there is no excuse for ignorance of that magnitude in 2014.
Alisa Stevenson says
Black people are diverse too. Just like God put different kinds of species of birds, flowers, animals and insects etc., he did the same for us. God said to go out multiply and be “fruitful”, to be…diverse. Some humans are so hateful that theyre ignorant and dumb at the same damn time.
Charissa Ann Smalls says
Is anyone else breaking the word Melanesian down other than me. Melan is pigmented skin (dark), it is common for black people to even have a disorder from meds etc., that will cause the nail bed to be dark in color. Which is called, Melanonychia. So, it’s not uncommon to see different pigments in the human body. I have a niece and nephew who were born with blonde hair and one had blue eyes. God’s creation is beautiful, so why can’t we all just thank him for who and how He created us as well as these precious children.
Talisia KillaSway Jones says
They are from Africa originally. Africans also migrated to other parts of the world outside of being taken as slaves. Read up on the Soloman Islands. Caucasisns found these ppl in the islands and converted them to Christianity.
Barbz N Jay says
They’re not of African descent.
Patrícia Atai says
Yes they are.Not all persons of African descent current reside in Africa Barbz.
Alina says
No, we are not. Not in the sense you are talking about Patricia. If we are of African descent, then you have to start calling Europeans of African Descent as well (seeing as we all came from Africa at some point) Seeing as my people ( my family come from Papua New Guinea and Fiji) left Africa way earlier then the descendants of Europe, Middle East and Asia, we are the farthest genomic match from Modern day Africans and their modern descendants. We are refer to ourselves as black, Melanesian, Indigenous or pacific islander. White people did NOT bring us to this island, we brought ourselves here. I think I know more about my history than an outsider.
Carrie Laura-Lee Howe says
Yes indeed some black people can be and are born with blond hair… While it is very rare to see, it does happen. I have an older sister who has natural red hair, it’s not bright like it’s died, but a darker hue… She’s constantly dying it black cause she doesn’t like it… Smh
Tj Low says
I do that too. I have the same problem and it is a problem. Natural hair color should compliment your natural skin tone. Mines doesn’t, makes me look ruddy… Ah, mixed chick problems. lol
Talisia KillaSway Jones says
Wikipedia! Or a good old fashioned history book. I learned this in the 8th grade.
Ebony Howard says
Love learning seeing new things god created
Angela M Martin says
My son is mixed and has dark skin and golden blonde hair as a newborn i had black hair which turned to white blonde and now back to brown so i have no clue why and i love my sons hair
Barbz N Jay says
For those of you that think this is bullcrap, it definitely isn’t. I’m Melanesian and yes there are some of us with natural blonde hair. Yes, we are dark skinned people but we’re not of African descent. Seen a few ignorant comments up in here. Do some research before jumping to conclusions and thinking that this is fake. Get your facts straight too.
We’re Pacific Islanders actually.
Alina says
Thank you! I’m Melanesian too and I get tired of people trying to tell me what I am just because they have no clue about other cultures outside of what they are use to. People like to group people into boxes to simplify their lives. Specially here in the US were I live and I have to constantly tell people I am not African American. I’m black, brown, or Indigenous, or pacific Islander, but I’m NOT African American. SMH
Shaleka Norris says
Just adorable!!!
Valerie Johnson says
Not of African descent..please explain…
Valerie Johnson says
Angela Martin…this is not related to being mixed race…these children have a gene separate from Europeans that gives them blond hair…
Toni Cheefa Grant says
Ive sewn a few black people with natural blonde hair. We are all different. Some more different than others.
Erica Ann Norman says
I think Melanesians are more closely related to Pacific Islanders or even Asians than Africans.
Barbz N Jay says
You got that right. Melanesians are Pacific Islanders actually.
Valerie Johnson says
They look African to me…just like Fijians…most likely they look closer to what the original Pacific Islanders looked like…as usual when you get to the root of any people you have dark skin and wooly hair…
Barbz N Jay says
But they’re not African
Eboni Dixon says
Beautiful complexion and hair
Nicole Guzman says
Beautiful children!
Talisia KillaSway Jones says
Migration. Some ppl don’t know their own history. Melanesians and other Asian Pacific islanders are all related to the Denisovans and Neanderthals that migrated out of Africa. Thank you.
Barbz N Jay says
I know my history thanks and no I aint talking about the whole human race here. So yeah.
Barbz N Jay says
Get your facts straight and in your previous comment you said that they’re originally from Africa, so that means you’re saying they’re directly from Africa. Read your own comments first before saying such shit. Pffft.
Trezza Vantte says
@Jamirah Saleem ;Ghetto is as ghetto says…#read a book
Paul Simiyu says
so beatiful babys,
Talisia KillaSway Jones says
If you think ppl of color just plopped down out of the sky in a remote part of the world you are clueless. And have no relation to a vast continent of ppl of color you need a book that goes much farther back in history.
Gina Harris-Strom says
Why do people keep posting this as if no one has ever seen an aboriginal! Geeesh
Anese Smile says
They originated from Africa. Barbz N Jay you can’t be Melanesian because you would know the history and apparently you don’t. Do your homework
Barbz N Jay says
I do actually and don’t need to be told by people who have never been to this part of the world. I am a Melanesian. No, they didn’t come from Africa. Just cause they’re black doesn’t mean they originated straight from Africa. You do your homework.
Deidre Deneé Orcutt says
beautifully awesome!
Tamikah Andrews says
different, but nice
Helga Walpole says
I believe Barbz N Jay. None of you are Melanesians like Barbz, so you don’t know anything about these people history!
Talisia KillaSway Jones says
Do a lil bit more research than come back. This must be the history the Christians taught these ppl when they invaded the islands and converted the people. They are infamous for diminishing a peoples culture.
Raven Marie says
Just because they naturally look like that doesn’t make it ok for these regular black and brown haired women running around bleaching their hair. Watch next week, you’ll see chicks say “I’m part Melanesian” lol.
Tamita Carter says
Absolutely beautiful
Yvonne Arielle Symone says
They r BEAUTIFUL children…….
Loka NoLabel Jackson says
Who gives a s**t what name it is? Yu not WHITE lmfaoo that’s all the white man needs to throw that s*t back in yur face
Bf Manthy says
natural born beauty
Miya Imani says
Just to clarify, all people are of African descent. Life originated in Africa, and through several processes including Pangea, the diaspora, and natural human migration, people were removed to other parts of the world. Human ability and survival mechanisms of adaptation caused shifts in pigment, growth, facial features and over time, even changes in genetic structure. Scientific experimentation and grafting also added to the splintering of races.. All in all, every race developed from the Black race, specifically in the continent of Africa… If you want to do some REAL research, go research that. FYI, its gonna take more than google and bing.com to find… Those are the type of facts they make you dig deep for because they’re still trying to undermind Our greatness and relevance in the world…
Tiffany Jones says
You are right about this. Hope every one reads this.
Shone' Janay says
Wow.. But of course everyone will overlook this comment. You are so right.
Barbz N Jay says
This wasn’t about the whole human race, it simply was about hair. Umm take your boring bullshit history lesson somewhere else. ZzzZzzzz
Dee Dee J Jones says
Say it, Miya!!!!!!!
Connie Hale says
Miya, you are so correct! Some people hate to hear the truth! Well said!!!!!
Donna Chesser says
This is old news. Blond hair is not a generic, it’s a mal function. Black people are the original. Life started in africa. When scientists did studies of why these bkack people have natural blond hair, they couldn’t find one.
Donna Chesser says
Raven MarieRave blond hair doesn’t belong to whites it’s a mal function gene, even scientists tell you that. So I don’t wear blond hair, but if a black woman wants to do what. THEY May Be Mixed Or not.
Donna Chesser says
Barbz N JayBarb sorry the entire world started in afruca. Look at the ethopian girls they look mostly light skin with wavy hair like Mexicans, like whitey on a different world! I know look at my daughter in my profile she is half ethopian. My son is half white they both look alike.
Barbz N Jay says
I know that. I already mentioned that and don’t need to be told again by people like you
Anese Smile says
Actually I have been to that part of the world I actually have family in that part of the world and I didn’t say they’re black just because they’re dark skin I actually know the history of them Barbz N Jay how the hell you know where I been like you know me
Barbz N Jay says
No, you sound like you don’t know anything about my people. You seem to be quite clueless to be honest. I don’t care what you think cause you DON’T know my culture/traditions. So stfu and stick.to your own ancestry and we’ll stick to ours. thanks
Barbz N Jay says
Seriously, why do people wanna argue about where Melanesians come from. Gosh. The majority of yous haven’t been to this part of the world and yous wouldn’t have a clue. Melanesians aint part of the African race. Our cultures and traditions are totally different and our languages are different as well. Nothing like Africans.
I know my descendants definitely didn’t come straight from Africa to the South Pacific, they came from South East Asia. So yeah. Don’t assume. I’m out. No point arguing with people who don’t have a clue about Pacific Islanders.
Donna Chesser says
Barbz N JayBarb egypt is in africa, ethopia somolians are africans, but they look way more India, and they are black, my daughter is half ethopian. Not all Africans look the same, actually egypt, ethopian etc look mixed. They are just the original black, and you don’t have to be their race to know this, I associate with them daily.
Barbz N Jay says
So what does that have to do with hair though? Who cares about race. This is obviously a page about hair, not where we come from. You don’t know so just stick to your own people and history.
Donna Chesser says
Merry MerryMerrill learn to spell
Donna Chesser says
Patrícia AtaiPatrick you incorrect, cause even in the bible jesus was described as having Wooley hair dark skin that is close to original, as You get. The word did start in africa, and scientists can’t figure out why these people have blond hair! !! Who are you!!
Charmaine Henderson-Lassiter says

Zennedy Bibbs says
It doesn’t matter. They have other problems to be worrying about..
Carrie Laura-Lee Howe says
American black people… Ok wait let me correct my self… (Some) American black people think that every black person just HAS to look like they do… News flash, there are many many different types of black people around the world with different types and colors of hair! Geeeesh! Get with the program already!
Barbz N Jay says
They think every black/dark skinned person comes from the same of ancestral line they came from. Umm nooo!

Dez Lynnea says
It’s still considered to be in the Middle East so thankyou for trying hunny
Shiyann Mckenzie says
It really isn’t considered to be in the Middle East lol. I didn’t know something could be 2 places at one time. It’s in north east Africa, right next to Sudan & Eritrea. Lol smh, never mind.

Ashley Jones says
Don’t be deceived. Egypt is and will always be in Africa. True Egyptians were black. The Egyptians you see in this day and time are not the original, they are invaders. 🙂
Shanece Kornegay says
Gorgeous. 🙂
Jaquita Tate says
They are the most beautiful children Amen I have seen God, is amazing to me…
Heather Bieke says
Dez Lynnea, Egypt IS in Africa. Look at a map. They may be considered Middle East based on culture and proximity to other Arab nations. But it is no doubt IN Africa.
Mekeitha Jenkins says
Wats the point Egypt African stuff it’s about the children being naturally. Blond Damn ppl make Shit so difficult
Miya Imani says
My previous statement still stands. How did they get to east Asia before migrating to the Solomon islands and Australia??? THEY MIGRATED FROM AFRICA, DOWN THE BERING STRAIGHTS INTO ASIA… Thus, they are still ORIGINALLY of African descent… I’m finished apeaking on it tho. Go look it up because it’s obvious a lot of people in this discussion don’t know their history.

We’re all mixed with some other race no one is pure. Now the kids are beautiful. Moving on
Niki NyNy Gerson says
Who said these kids was African or from African decent? Pigment of skin has LITTLE to do with race…as we should all know black people can look all sorts of ways WITHOUT even being mixed. That includes hair skin and features. So why limit yourself in believing these kids from this tribe HAVE to be from African decent? ( yes even tho we are ALL originally from Africa)
Patrice Kinsey says
Such beautiful children
Charisse Doingmeforme Mason says
Awwwwww. Beautiful
Jan Bradwell says

You guys are missing the whole piont of the pic. Sitting up here arguing about the original geographical location of the origin of these people!!! SIT BACK AND ADMIRE THEM. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL UNIQUE PEOPLE. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less.
Fatrina Philasofe Nicholson says
my question is why does color matter so much to people…like who the hell cares….why is it a debate. We can all see that there is way more diversity than most people were aware of but we always have to turn stuff into a big deal….the debating seriously looks stupid…
Julia Valdary says
Ohh I’ve seen them before I think most of them are in madagascar
