I don’t know about you but I am so tired of hearing about little girls that are discriminated against because of their hair. 12 year old Vanessa VanDyke attended Faith Christian Academy in Orlando Florida. The school has given Vanessa a week to decide if she will cut her hair or get expelled.
Faith Christian Academy considers Vanessa’s hair a ‘distraction’ and it really became a problem when she complained of being bullied and teased at school about it. The best solution the Christian School could find was to give Vanessa the ultimate ultimatum; Cut your hair or leave the school.
Last time I checked education was a child’s right and our role as parents, teachers and school officials was to make that happen despite what grows from a child head. Faith Christian sees things a little different; they apparently have a thing against black hair. Honestly when I read these stories, my personal opinion is that it is not just discriminatory based on the subject of hair, but it is racist as well. I will leave that there for you to think about a bit.
When asked about her hair Vanessa said “It says that I’m unique,” “First of all, it’s puffy and I like it that way. I know people will tease me about it because it’s not straight. I don’t fit in.”
This stuff is so enraging, and to think that everyday we are trying to teach our daughters to accept themselves for who they are, every strand, finger nail, pinky toe, likes and dislikes, just for them to go to school get ridiculed and cannot even trust the grow ups around them to care.
On a positive note, Elle Varner wrote a beautiful poem dedicated to Little Vanessa that we thought we would share:
Hair Care
So much they care about my hair. As if it wasn’t standing there
Before they even asked my name. They’re sizing up my massive mane.
Or judging by my lack of locks, So many things I am not. A little box I’m Crowded in,
A label now upon my skin.
So much they missed, and all because my hair was not.
Like their hair was. But a ballerina with no bun.
It’s not a sky without a sun. So whatever be upon your head, a Blonde toupee or Tar toned
Dreads. May they see you for who you are, and care what lies within your heart
Elle Varner
Vanessa, if you read this, just know that you are beautiful just the way you are.
Sincerely,
The BHI Team
[UPDATE]
After Local 6’s original story aired, school administrators changed have now changed their requests of Vanessa and her family.
We are not asking her to put products in her hair or to cut her hair,” read a statement sent to Local 6. “We are asking her to style her hair within the guidelines according to the school handbook.
The handbook does not specify a problem with large or frizzy hair, noting only, “Mohawks, shaved signs, rat tails, etc.” are not allowed. The child’s mother said that she and Vanessa would talk about their options over Thanksgiving.
Not quite the complete backtrack we are have been hoping for based on how these stories usually turn out but at least it’s a start.
Ashley Selmon-Mosley says
Omg! This child is beautiful with a head full of gorgeous hair. Why can’t see rock it?,People are STUPID and always looking for something to complain about. STFU ain’t there other stuff in the world to complain about, besides this child hair??? GEESH
Esther Gillyard says
Its even sadder to see black women saying her hair looks a mess, who say they support natural styles. SMH
Peachey Lynn says
all she needs is a pony tail and she good
THERESA says
My thoughts exactly! She is cute and has loads of hair. So many hair accessories out there for little girls (and big girls). No need to have your hair be a reason to get you down and depressed! All of my sister’s and I had hair to our waists and longer as children, and we wore our hair in two plaits until we were teens (70’s and 80’s). My hair is similar to that little girl’s hair and trust me I wouldn’t have attempted to wear it “out” in New Orleans in the summer! But, all that to say, plaits or neat ponies will keep her hair protected and untangled. Even a nice rollerset will allow her to wear it down and it won’t be so “puffy” as she calls it. She’ll appreciate it later. Chin up bebe!
Consuella Haskins says
Let’s not cut it, but tame it and see how they feel about that.
Shanique Buntyn says
i keep seeing this pic everywhere. If her hair is really that big of the problem. She can sit in a seat where she cant block children behind her. She has beautiful hair but if i had to sit behind her in class it would get annoying especially if i couldnt see the board. She doesnt need to cut her hair, she can just simply change seats. Its not a big deal and she def didnt need to be kicked out.
Karen Madison says
The school reversed the decision and will not make her cut her hair. Thank God for that. It was wrong in the first place.
Kerri Senegal says
That’s crazy!
Tameka Ferrebee says
jus leave her alone let her learn in school….that’s what you go to school for
Tanaira Carrington says
smh
Fiona Atherton says
She has beautiful hair, but I don’t think it should be styled like that for school. In my class all of the students are expected to have any hair long enough to be tied up, tied up. This includes the boys. I do not want the children fiddling with hair or having to move it off their faces during lessons. A ponytail would be more than adequate to ensure they didn’t happen. Children are at school to learn, not make a fashion / political statement.
Fiona Atherton says
That didn’t happen, not they!
Angela Mauriello says
i was just reading this schools reviews on yelp. Not only are they racist, they also dont know how to teach. SMH
Sandra Ndekwe says
just should tidy it up alittle for school ….no styling needed shes at school to learn !!
Sheryl Hite says
This is ridiculous there is nothing wrong with her hair , but I see when white girls come to school with red , blue , green and some more colors nobody say nothing smh
Marscharikkia McGhee says
Seems to me the school is worried about the wrong things. A child’s learning and education should come first not the style their hair is in
Donna Oneovakind Cross says
I cant wait til my fro get half that length. I wish someone would complain. So now our natural AFROS have a “puff” limit? SMH
Dawanna GlorytoGod Allen says
HATERS!!!!!
Nahasher Burke says
Well if d childs hair is ott its ott! Sum blk moms need to stop making a fashion statement thru their kidz at school!! I think its cos u couldn’t have fros at school ur taking d cake now!
Raesheea Smith says
Dont ever cut your hair let grow as long and big as u want it.
Benita Always'wins says
THIS made my stomach turn, cause I’m damn sure they didn’t ask the little girl with long blonde hair to cut her hair.
Mollie Sumerlin says
I’m angry that is all
Jehan Dabone says
We wear a weave it’s a problem we wear our natural hair it’s a problem. Damned if we do damned if we don’t. smh
Latricia Hopes says
Tie hair up ponytail the parents kniwd what to do that’s just to big and parent nos that just braid or plat hair come on
Denicea James says
She can braid it or comb it in a way that isn’t obstructive to ppl behind her, but to get kicked out of school come on now… this is a situation where she needs an education and ppl behind her can see!
Robbin Washington says
What about the kids that come to school with hair spiked….blue….red…whatever color….is anything ever said?? Hell no!!!! Smh
Ashley Lawton says
Jim Crow all over mixed with Willie Lynch
Dorian Johnson says
Wow! This generation. So sad.
Nique's Sweet's says
This is just crazy!!
Nneka says
She should sue the school! This is outrageous .. They used to make us cut our hair in my secondary school if it was not natural and made us remove any artificial hair because the vice principal was an Anglican priest’s wife who was fanatical ! Only the mixed race kids were allowed to perm or straighten their hair because they felt they had hair like that because of their mixed race!!!
Mo Verveer says
Why can’t she rock her hair the way it is and grows out of her head like some of (for example) white kids. Aint no body telling them that they should change their hairstyle. Are u telling me that her natural hair isn’t good enough. And she should tame this beautiful god given hair. As if it’s a bad thing and she should be ashamed of it. It is not messy it’s a damn fro. It’s is the kind of hair that black people are born with. Ya’ll need to accept it and learn to love it.
Maria Logis says
r u serious ????? O_o nooooooooo !!!!!!
Sarah Lowery says
nothing is wrong with her hair
Olatha Fletcher says
Smdh!
Sandra Morris says
She born with it so let she wear. Who don’t like it must go an jump off in hell.
Phyllis Ntim Golden says
There’s an update that the Vanessa VanDyke won’t be expelled. Read more here: http://pniridescent.com/2013/11/27/african-american-girl-wont-face-expulsion-over-natural-hair/
Ebony Wooden says
This is so ridiculous!!! Your telling a lil girl she cant learn cause of how she looks wat kind of message are they sending to children that its not okay to be who you are. I dont care what anyone says but this is very racial and discrminitive
Josselyn Runyon says
I seen this this morning that’s a shame let her be her we as kids need to express are selves what about these other people who come to school with all blue purple and pink hair it anti fair and there is nothing said but when somebody want to wear there natural hair and express them self they can’t girl rock your natural despite what they say black girls rock be blessed and safe
Goddessweaves Virgin Hair Bundle Deals says
They are so jealous! We really need to embrace our natural and make them mad!!!
Goddessweaves Virgin Hair Bundle Deals says
#Boycott perms! Simply minded Evil bastards! Piss me off they got some nerves!
Lakesha Coleman says
Amen this so sad the really need to let kida be kids I not like hurting anyone
Goddessweaves Virgin Hair Bundle Deals says
This is happening because Blacks in this country got too comfortable or scared and stop fighting! These are signs of what’s to come, if we do not wake up!
Ken Cornelius says
That girl needs a comb. AS A girl with big curly hair , you can not go to school with your hair lookin a hot mess. Kids behind her cant see and she looks unpresentable. Nothing to do with race.
Jemele Jackson says
They should sue the school, they have no right to expell her from school, this is racism, they judging her by her hair that naturally grow out her head. I am sick of this crap. This is 2013! So any other race can where there hair down but African Americans can’t where there hair don’t because its frizzy and puffy. This is discrimination and I want stand for it. This is not the year 1916! Noone has the right to judge noone opinion, character or appearance. We got stand up and wake up for our children. This is ridiculous!
Deatrice Hildreth says
It’s really stupid!
La'Idra N'Vee Bolden says
Ken Cornelius, she does not look unpresentable smh. If the reason was kids behind her couldn’t see they could’ve asked her to sit in the last row. Her hair is beautiful, not a hot mess. This isn’t the 1st school to behave that way about natural hair on African-Americans. Saying that she needs a comb & calling her hair a hot mess is the reason why so many ppl don’t like their hair. Its always someone judging & not letting others be who they want to be smh.
Sharon Adena Woodley says
she need to tame that birds nest
Iyauna says
Really! you didn’t say that? Was that nessasarry? We’re talking about a little girl, who wants to wear her hair freely which is good. That was very insulting.
Chelsea LeAnne says
people are so ignorant.
Patrice Thongs says
if she has to tie her hair up then all the white girls need to do the same. …basically if she can’t have her hair left out naturally neither can they…make it do across the board or stop with the racist bullshit
Tawnya Imstillstandin Bonds says
Y r they focusin on her hair. Focuse on if she’s learning Anything. Is the school system doin they job right. How r her grades. Those r things that should b of some concern.
Vine Lents says
Really
Marsha Buchanan says
The child dared to be different and I admire her resolve, but as a teacher myself I can see how persons might complain that they can’t see when sitting behind her. If that was the real issue it could be remedied by changing her seat. Put her to the back, put her in the end rows, but that’s not the issue is it? This looks more like an attempt at forcing us to conform to their ideals. Do you realize the frequency with which this stuff just pops up? It sure does make you wonder.
Lisa Drummond says
I’ll be raising hell & on my way to court! Something has gotta give! #Prejudice
Steffi Brown says
Smh America just gets backwards each and everyday!!!
Mikedra Lammons says
Sly Burgess what you would have did ?? Read it then text me.
Devera Smith Robinson says
Hey hair is the bomb! I’m loving it. They say it’s a distraction because of the other kids, so they should be disciplined, not her.
Marie-Christela Duetrivil says
It’s natural and God gave her that type of hair. Coming from a fake Christian school… They need to be shut down… With the racism… Shame on them ….
Kashanna Henderson says
Sue for discrimination!!
Melanie Simms says
The school should be sued for discrimination; however, her mother needs to comb her hair. I love natural hair. We should be proud, but “unkept” is another thing.
PEACELILLY says
You say she should sue for racial discrimination but then you state the mother should comb her hair in a different style. How is your statement any different from the schools reactions? There is nothing wrong with her hair and she should be allowed to wear it as styled. “who is ever going to agree that a particular style is acceptable?” So, who is right and who is wrong? Black women state that we should be proud of our natural hair and wear it proudly. Yet, on the other hand, so many remarks about the child’s hair not being presentable. You can’t have it both ways or so it seems! It is a shame that Black children have to go through extra mess not only from other minority groups but even their own. HER HAIR IS UNKEPT? WHAT IS UNKEPT? SOMEONE MIGHT THINK YOUR HAIR IS UNKEPT? HOPE YOUR GETTING MY POINT? YOUR JUDGING UNFAIRLY!
Lau Smith says
if i had all that hair…i wouldnt care abit if i had to jump from one school to another that hair is simply beautifl…n instead of her going from schl to schl y cnt the other parents transfer their own kids instead thea the ones with the problm
PEACELILLY says
JUMP FROM ONE SCHOOL TO ANOTHER JUST TO KEEP HER NATURAL HAIR? HOW SILLY IS YOUR STATEMENT! A CHILD TRANSFERRING TO ANOTHER SCHOOL IS TOTALLY DISRUPTIVE TO THE CHILD AND THEIR FAMILY. HAVING A HEAD OF LONG HEALTHY HAIR IS NOT REASON ENOUGH TO SWITCH SCHOOLS JUST FOR THE SAKE OF KEEP THE LONG HAIR. THE POINT IS THAT, THIS IS HER NATURAL HAIR AND SHE HAS THE RIGHT TO WEAR IT IN A MANNER THAT PLEASES HER AND NOT SOCIETY. IF BLACK PARENTS JUST GIVE IN TO MOVING TO ANOTHER SCHOOL AND/OR CUTTING THEIR DAUGHTERS HAIR THEN THIS UNFAIR PRACTICE WILL BEGIN IN OTHER SCHOOLS. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT YOU WILL HAVE OTHER ORGANIZATIONS FOLLOWING SUIT AND THEN NOONE IS SAFE FROM THIS PRACTICE. NEXT, IT WILL JUST BE SIMPLY STATE, ‘BLACK WOMEN YOUR HAIR IS ULGY AND DISTRACTING AND YOU MUST WEAR A RELAXER OR A WEAVE IF YOU WANT TO LIVE HERE. WORK HERE OR BE HERE.
Alonna Gilmore says
They didn’t have to kick her out over hair. Another hairstyle would do fine.
PEACELILLY says
WHY SHOULD SHE HAVE TO WEAR ANOTHER HAIR STYLE? THAT IS HER NATURAL HAIR AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE STYLE. HERE WE GO, THE NATURALS SAYING BE PROUD OF YOUR HAIR AND YOUR HAIR STYLE BUT ONLY IF EVERYONE ELSE LIKES IT. THE SCHOOL JUST DOES NOT LIKE THE CHILD LOOKING TO BLACK. IT MAKES SO MANY PEOPLE NERVOUS SO THEY CLAIM IT IS DISTRACTING WHEN WHAT THEY MEAN IS “YOUR BLACK HAIR IS UNNATURAL AND ULGY. JUST READ ALL THE COMMENTS OF PEOPLE SAYING, HER HAIR JUST NEEDS A DIFFERENT STYLE. WHO IS TO SAY WHAT IS FAIR IN HOW THAT STYLE LOOKS? AS LONG AS THE ADMINISTRATORS ARE NOT TO OFFENDED THEN SHE CAN WEAR A STYLE THAT DOES NOT MAKE THEM CRINGE.
Raven ChynnaKa'oir Nichols says
My Black is beautiful
Vanessa Anthony Holloman says
Why is it that every other race can wear their hair in the natural form except for African Americans? It always seems to be a problem…..
Denise NewlyNatural Foster says
Bby eff em yo hair is beautiful rock yo natural hair to hell wit what anybody think nd they cant kick u out of school for tht bastards
Regine K-m says
Okay, no one said cut the hair, just French braid down some. Imagine being the kid seating behind her. I’m pure African, from Congo and I have mix nieces and nephews with the big hair, it’s all about how we take care of it so it’s not frizzy and out of place
Regine K-m says
Wear your hair however you want it, but when you’re in other people institution follow the rules and manage you Hair
Chris Owens says
Huh… rasict
Jehovah Keeps Blessing Shalom says
aww she is really cute so is her hair
Tasheshia Izluvinqueforlyfe Sharpe says
They mad cause some other rich kid has a problem with her hair cause there hair isn’t as beautiful as hers so they got there parents who have more more money quote on quote more seniority to pay the school off so there kid can be the baddest kid thats f***ed up ijs yall know how that s*** goes some people will even kill for there kid to be popular smh sooooo sad….
Mia Corbett says
the problem started when her parents complained about her being taunted about hwr hair. They initiated the concern that hee hair was a distraction. But who thinks the child needs to do something with her hair. Hot oil treatment conditioner comb something. She needs to have her edges trimmed something. No blowout no perm no hot comb not flat iron Not even braided just some attention more than the bow.
Zenda Jones says
They need to comb the little girls hair. Natural hair doesn’t mean not comb and not take care of it. Brush it and put it into a ponytail.
B'Neen Highheeldiva says
It’s her hair! Stop making suggestions on how she should wear it!
Iyauna says
This is beyond disappointment, when is racism going to stop. This girl civil rights has been violated to it finest. This is sad i would sue and leave, that school because it’s only but only going to get worse .
nanette says
I’m sure she don’t were the hairstyle everyday, that would be boring. There are many hairstyles she probably do differenty, what is wrong with her hair. People should be aware of people of color hair and what is natural to them. If a person with hair down to their feet, will they tell them to cut it, because that is a distraction. Maybe all boys should have there hair cut bald like they do in the military, that way they would not have to worry about how should they fix their hair to get the girls attention, and all girls should put their hair in one ponytail in a ball, that way you wont have a competition to see who is the prettiest or have the prettiest hair. That should sholve the problem. Don’t let them be different that way there is not competition and they have no choice but to work on their studies. Problem sholved
Lucky says
Whew! I’m sitting here feeling FURIOUS! This beautiful child has to go to this racist school, knowing she’ll be tease and harassed because of her hair “These people” (yeah, you know who I’m talking about) are so backwards! This is proof positive that the struggle STILL continues! I’m just going to stop it right here because if I said what’s really on my mind, I would probably be banned from this informative blog!
Shannon Anderson says
Infuriating!!
Roberta Hosey says
I’m concerned about my daughter. She’s gonna start pre k in a christian private school. She wears braids and twits. I hope it won’t be a problem.
LaToya Beautiful-Butterfly Johnson says
Braids and twist shouldn’t be a problem. I guess the school issue was that her hair was untamed, according to their updated response..
Neen Heiress says
It doesn’t excuse peoples ignorance, but this story is old.
Alexis Green says
Her hair is LOVELY! And I’m not saying this because I’m a black girl I’m just saying so PERIOD!
Raven Marie says
Story is hell old, but
Hellen Kamau says
So there is bullying in Christian schools too?
Reggie Jones says
I went through the same thing with my Child, except she was wearing different colors in her hair, the school Kept suspending her each week , why because each week she’ll come to School with a different color, so I took it to the Board of Education and at that time it wasn’t in any hand book that a child could not have color in their hair…. as Parents we have to fight for our kids Rights… Leave that child alone her hair is Beautiful!!
Atiya Moore says
Her hair is doing what her hair does! It looks clean and combed through. What’s the problem?!? I let my hair do what it do! Big hair…don’t care!
Kelly Jamila says
conspIracy
Maricia Whittaker says
Sad
Wendy Jean-Louis says
Well it might be if kids were sitting behind her. Nothing wrong with letting it run wild. But her hair like that looks tangled I guess they just want her to look neat I guess
La Toya Rivers says
Beautiful grl
Shimon McLean says
This story is VERY old. Secondly, people have to understand that there are rules in private schools concerning appearance. The private school I worked for required girls to have hair to be pulled back neatly. This is not complicated and had nothing to do with natural hair. Her parents know the rules. Moving on..
BlackHairInformation.com says
Sorry it was reblogged by accident 🙂
Nikkie Yearwood says
@ Shimon well said. Rules are there to be kept.
Kay McLean says
You know what, I’m all for natural hair..my daughter’s hair is natural. However, when she is at school it is braided back nicely or in a ponytail. He hair is to wild to be out. If you want to fight for a cause go right ahead, but cmon if her hair is out like that all the time I cld see why the school wouldn’t accept that. Be a parent and tell the child that she has all weekend to wear her hair how she likes but come monday it needs to be don’t proper! End of discussion.
Kourtney Boston says
What the fuck does wild hair have to do with an education?
Tarin Cee says
She is wearing her hair extra big all,she had to do was tone it down
Besie Bennett says
Please don’t take offense because I think you are BEAUTIFUL but what if someone asked you to tone down those thick lips and that wide nose? It’s the same thing! your facial features are as natural as that girls hair. As long as the hair is clean and free of lice why is it an issue. Ppl get use to your look when you don’t make excuses or apologies for it! Yeah for a few days they might say good grief look at all that hair then eventually kids find something else to talk about.
Krys Fol says
it’s not the same thing and you know it.
Tarin Cee says
They choose to go to a private school with rules and regulations, hair isnt that serious and if u saw the interview cause i did, her mom
Was intentionally making her hair as big as possible, the kid wont die from a ponytail.
Menda Blessed says
There is nothing wrong with this child! Thats why so many young girls have self image problems! Because people judge them!:(
Unothando Baartman says
What is wrong with schools in america what up with the discrimination aga-mane nxa
Kashmere Noel says
Does this school not realise how psychologically damaging it is to point out to a child not only how different they are from society and make this out to be a negative thing?! children can be self conscious enough about standing out, but when adults who are supposed to protect them from bullying go ahead and make the discrimination themselves it just reinforces the belief that something is ‘wrong’ with them. It makes me so angry, because as far as I’m concerned it is a racial issue. This girl was BORN with hair that grows big just like many other girls are BORN with hair that lays flat. Why should what is natural to her be a distraction just because it is different to what is natural to someone else?! Why should she have to tame it? Are they telling all the other girls that they need their hair cut or put in neat braids or ponytails for school? It’s because of attitudes like this that I hated my hair at her age, would never have worn it in it’s natural state out, because it was so big, and ultimately damaged my hair trying to tame it to the standards that are being set for ‘presentable’ by society. Grrr
Anna Ogonji Smith says
They wanted her to cut it….HELL NO. IT TAKES TOO LONG TO GROW.
Ladie Fulton says
So, all have comment. What is the latest update. It is now July 2014 and that was November 2013. I would very much like those details.
Besie Bennett says
Nobody asks the white girl to comb tame or pull her hair neat! If every other ethnic group can be proud and wear their natural why can’t we?? Why we always have to conform to what whites say is acceptable? This has to be a form of discrimination?? I mean what this says is that black people aren’t acceptable the way God made them, that they need fixing as if something is wrong with us. This is psychologically damaging to a child and makes them feel inferior. What’s next are they going to say oh I’m sorry your lips are too thick for this school or I’m afraid your nose is wider than is acceptable here have cosmetic surgery or look to be educated some where else????
Andrea Angie Tater says
This is the 21st Century!!!! the age of acceptance and live and let live these adults need to grow up and BE CHRISTIANS in their ACTIONS.
Ebony Dorsey says
What does hair have to do with education ? If the teachers and principal was doing their job they wouldn’t notice or be worried about her hair …do what you get paid to do just teach
Jenny JackJack says
This story is so old! This girls’s hair is a mess! It’s a distraction ….. My natural hair was always neat and groomed well…..Comb the hair and get over it.
Donna Chesser says
My daughter has this same hair and is light, but she not mixed!
Donna Chesser says
How is her hair horrible and not groomed. It’s black hair, our hair grows up not down. We shouldn’t hide our hair. To the so called natural girls!
Asha Lewis says
Old
Evelyn Bernardez says
Down south those white people are fuckin racist
Monique Youn says
She is a beautiful child
Serita DirtyRedd Stanley says
If teachers spent more time teaching & not paying attention to a child’s hair maybe these children would know something.
Bri TrellesMommy Walker says
Thats discrimination fr fr…against black culture
Joycelyn Lanae says
People watch the video before commenting. The problem is that she wore her hair like this for months without problems from her school, but once she complained about being bullied about her hair then they threaten to kick her out if she doesn’t change her hairstyle. Why is the victim being punished while the children doing the bullying aren’t.
Also, why can a person with straight hair where their hair out, but when a person with kinkier hair texture does its a problem. Why does her hair have to be pressed down straight for it not to be considered a distraction. My child’s hair or my hair shouldn’t have to be braided down or pulled back for it to be “acceptable”, but a white girl’s hair don’t because it lays flat…that doesn’t seem right
Mariah A. Harris says
I am so tried of these stories. Look having hair is not the issue. Doing nothing with it is. My daughter has plenty of hair and she only wear it down on holidays or a special day or event any more then that her hair because a fight to deal with. So please stop with the natural that’s how she is bull maintain and manage your lovely hair for longevity. Point blank . If I sit behind someone with big hair and I can’t see the board as an adult I can move as a child I am assigned a seat so moving is complicated. The world is becoming a bit self center in all for what a little t.v. time
Apryl Byrd says
This is discrimination…of origin and race. Her parents have this case in the bag if they dont conform!
Taylor says
i am confused when did it become an issue for black children to wear natural hair to school? I mean really… is it distracting the other children in the class. i mean the only way i could see it being an issue is if some one behind her in class can’t see i mean i understand but still… you don’t tell a child you have 1 week to cut your hair or get out of school. like children have the right to go to school. it gives them something to do and to educate them selves to be the best them they can be. I understand certain things in school make you cool and popular. but if i were a student there i would love her hair i would be some what jealous because its beautiful! and that the thing to be friends with certain people and to be considered ‘cool’ you have to look like them talk like them live like them. its a shame what society has done to the world
