4. Hairstyles you wore at 35 might not be as flattering at 55
After 20 years that style you have had forever might not be as great as something a bit more timeless. Hair styles like bobs, or a layered haircut can stand the test of time, and they are done over and over again, year after year.
The thing about natural hair is that it is naturally timeless so if you take the plunge and have gone natural, just know that if you added a little shape you will be A-ok where style is concerned.
If you want to get something a bit trendy for your natural hair, there is nothing wrong with that, we wouldn’t expect you to rock an undercut or shaved side, but if you wanted to get sophisticated fade, send us the picture because we are sure that would be all the way fly!
5. No need to cut your hair off
We have seen many women keep their hair for as long as they live without using one pair of scissors except for regular trims. Gone are the days where if you are over 45, or over 59 and you have some understood requirement to cut your hair. We aren’t even sure who came up with that rule, because hair length is not determined by age.
On the other hand of things we have seen older women big chop and keep their hair probably less than an inch high because thats what works for them and their lifestyle.
If you are 30, 40, 50, 60 feel free to keep your long hair if that is what you like. If you want to spruce things up, add a few layers, and color as we mentioned and enjoy your hair.
6. Your hair doesn’t have to thin
You will hear that post menopausal women tend to have thin hair, but there are many who don’t as well. If there is a chance that your hair is thinning due to some underlying condition, then you must see a doctor to determine what that is.
There is no rule or scientific cause behind hair thinning based on age, it does happen though so stay close to your doctor if you discover it happening to you.
7. Find a style that keeps you young
Bobs, which we mentioned are great, bangs are also known to add a little youthfulness to your look. Find a style that flatters your face and plays up your great features.
Natural hair is pretty versatile so feel free to style it in ways that flatters you. The point is, you want to keep things simple for yourself and not worry too much about everything we might sputter out daily about our hair. Do what is best for you and your hair.

I’m 66 and I decided to go natural like I did in the 70’s. I do color my hair about every 6 to 8 weeks. I did a big chop in July and its growing back just fine. I go to a place call Great Clips and get the tapered cut touch up and I’m good. #lovemynaturalhair

Have you experienced any thinning ? Some pals of mine say they got to their 60s & their hair really started thinning & they now wear stylish wigs.

I returned to natural hair in 2009 when I gave up my curly perm after 28 years. I,too had been natural in the late 60s thru the 70s. I decided to go natural again after a long conversation at the salon the day I got what turned out to be my last curly perm. The talk was about how many black women we knew who started losing their hair in their late 40s on up & especially in their 50s & the fact that almost all of them had had relaxers for decades. The general consensus was that women who stuck to the press & curl had far less hairloss. At the time I had no thinning spots altho I am post menopausal. I decided then & there NO MORE PERMS & did the big chop when the next touchup time came around. Despite what the article says there are A LOT of older black women…at least in my area…who are losing their hair or have thinning hair. In fact, one of the women in my social club is almost completely bald. All she has is gray peach fuzz, & the look is not flattering on her at all.not even enough hair to qualify as a TWA. I also know a few women who have that scarring alopecia which results in permanent hair loss. There are lots of women wearing TWAs & some have thick hair but others have a lot of scalp showing.

I’m 55 and natural for 4 years. I love it. I’ve had plenty of push back from my family. I didn’t go natural to make a statement. My daughter encouraged me since she is natural with beautiful hair. I had problems with relaxers…even mild and children’s relaxers caused a LOT of pain at the crown of my head. I even felt pain and tingling weeks after the relaxers. My crown was broken and damaged. I did the comb over to hide it. Frustrated, I visited a dermatologist. He cut pieces of my hair, put them under a microscope, looked at my scalp and told me I had healthy follicles, but like other African American women he had seen before me, my scalp could not handle relaxers. Years of lye applied and seeping in my scalp had damaged it. He said my hair looked like a forest after a tornado. He told me to take notice of other African American women of my age with thinning hair from using relaxers over the years. I decided to take the plunge into natural hair. I transitioned with braids. I have NEVER looked back. My scalp has never felt better. The hair at the crown has grown as long as the rest of my head. I often see older women with relaxed hair so thin you can see through it!!! To each his own.
